Mental Training, Inc. has partnered with Athletes’ Performance for the second year in a row to help prepare their NFL Combine athletes for the 2014 NFL Draft. The Combine athletes will work with MTI’s Mental Trainers® to develop mental skills needed to perform consistently well at the elite level, as well as how best to prepare for the Wonderlic test.

The importance of mental toughness to the success of an NFL athlete is a concept that is finally gaining the attention it deserves within the professional football community. In addition to the Wonderlic test, the NFL is now requiring Combine athletes to also take a “mental agility” test to provide more comprehensive evidence about the athlete’s mental capabilities while performing. Athletes’ Performance (AP) is an organization that provides complete training for NFL Combine athletes, both physical and mental. AP originally reached out to Mental Training, Inc.(MTI) in 2012 to help their athletes prepare mentally.

Since that time, MTI and AP have continued to strengthen their professional relationship to develop and implement a mental skills and Wonderlic training program that will better prepare these Combine athletes for a career in the NFL. Beyond teaching test taking strategies for the Wonderlic test (a 12 minute test focused on assessing the learning intelligence, aptitude, and problem-solving abilities of each athlete), MTI teaches AP athletes what mental toughness is and why it’s critical to their success.

As Trevor Moawad, VP of Mindset Programs with Athletes’ Performance says, “ We focus on the psychological testing, all the specific elements that are integrated into the Combine. We also focus on the motivational pieces, ‘Why am I doing this? What are the scouts looking for? What are the teams looking for? What did I do well at the collegiate level? And what do I need to modify to make myself a better asset going into the professional level?’ so that when you step into that moment you’re ready.”

Once the athletes understand WHY mental toughness is important, MTI’s Mental Trainers® focus on HOW to improve their mental toughness. To help these athletes be prepared, MTI teaches them the same mental skills (like goal setting, visualization, self-talk control, and emotional intelligence) that help youth, amateur, collegiate, and professional athletes learn to control their emotions so they can perform their best when it matters the most.
